Houssine Kharja Returns to France, Signs with Sochaux
After a season in Qatar with Al Arabi Sports Club, Moroccan international Houssine Kharja has made his return to French football, signing a contract with Ligue 2 side Sochaux until the end of the season.
In an interview with Footmercato, the experienced midfielder explained why he chose Sochaux over other offers:
“I had concrete contacts in England, Italy, Portugal, and with Sochaux. I spoke with the sporting director Bernard Maraval and coach Olivier Echouafni — they truly believed in me. They made me feel important. I also wanted to return to competition quickly, and Sochaux was ready to act fast. That’s why I’m here.”
Despite never having played professionally in France, Kharja, 32, sees the move as a new challenge and is eager to make an impact:
“I’m curious because I’ve never experienced professional football in France. I want to return to my top level and help the team as much as I can. Sochaux has a strong squad and a good technical staff. I hope we can return to Ligue 1 as quickly as possible.”
Kharja also briefly touched on his tumultuous stint in Qatar, which ended on a sour note after a physical altercation with Brazilian player Nêne, formerly of PSG. The incident led to his departure from Al Arabi.
Now settled in Sochaux, Kharja aims to bring his experience and leadership to help push the club toward promotion.
