Zakaria El Ouahdi, the young Genk right-back, has responded to growing speculation over his potential switch in national allegiance.
The 22-year-old, who was born in Antwerp, Belgium, but has ties to Morocco, recently clarified his stance amidst controversy regarding his international future.
The talented defender, who has been called up to Morocco’s senior squad without yet making an appearance, sparked a heated debate in November when he expressed openness to representing Belgium, his birth nation.
Of course, hearing that I could be in the Belgian selection is something very beautiful too,” he said at the time.
It would become a dilemma if I were called up.
These remarks triggered a strong reaction from Moroccan fans, with many accusing the Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medalist of disloyalty.
Seeking to ease tensions, El Ouahdi later added, “Do I still dream of being selected with Morocco? Yes, of course.
Clarifying his position
In a recent joint interview with his father and agent, Mohamed Achahbar, for Belgian media outlet Het Laatste Nieuws, El Ouahdi sought to clarify his priorities.
When asked about the possibility of a Belgian call-up in March 2025, his father initially deflected the question, stating, “That is not the question at the moment.

Zakaria then offered a definitive statement: “Of course, Belgium is a beautiful country, but my heart is Moroccan.
His father further emphasized their loyalty by adding, “And the blood too.
This reaffirmation of commitment to Morocco has been interpreted as a strong indication of where El Ouahdi’s loyalties ultimately lie.
However, some analysts suggest the comments may also serve to calm tensions with Moroccan supporters while the young player continues to weigh his options.
A crucial decision looms
El Ouahdi’s situation highlights the complex emotions and pressures faced by dual-national players.
For Morocco, retaining a talent like El Ouahdi would bolster their growing footballing ambitions under coach Walid Regragui.
Conversely, Belgium’s interest in securing the player reflects their desire to rejuvenate their defensive options.
The Genk defender, who delivered a standout assist in his club’s recent 2-0 victory over Anderlecht, is expected to make his final decision by 2025, with March potentially marking a pivotal moment.
While El Ouahdi continues to develop his game in Belgium’s top flight, the battle for his allegiance underscores the broader dynamics of international football, where identity and opportunity intersect on the global stage.
